About Colchester
Colchester is Britain's oldest recorded town, as is
proudly written on all the large signs as you approach the town. Not surprisingly it is of
considerable historical and archaeological interest. Colchester Castle has the largest
Norman keep still standing and houses a fascinating museum. The castle itself is built on
the remains of the temple of Claudius which was burned down by Boadicea in AD 60.
For country lovers, Dedham (Constable Country) and rural and coastal Suffolk are
nearby, and the Norfolk Broads are just over an hour's
drive away. The many attractions of London are only 45 minutes away by train to Liverpool
Street Station. Cambridge is also very close. Brightlingsea and West Mersea are well known
centres for sailing.
We have excellent cultural, recreational and educational facilities - a repertory
theatre, cinemas, roller skating rink (one of the finest in Europe) and a large leisure
centre incorporating competition and fun pools.
The leisure centre also has gyms and facilities for tennis, badminton, squash, football and just about every other sport. There are many other sports clubs including golf, Colchester United FC and Colchester Rugby Club. Colchester is also home to the University of Essex.
